The intention of this website is two fold: to find a place for my writing and enable readers to react to it, and to encourage readers to send their own writing to me.

Lou Spaventa grew up in Brooklyn, New York. An asthmatic, chunky child, he read a lot when he wasn’t on the Brooklyn streets playing stickball, triangle, kings, pitchin’ in, touch football, buck buck, three steps to Germany…Well the list just goes on. He was supposed to be a scientist and help the U.S. win the Cold War, but he wound up an English major by default. It took up less time, which meant more time for guitar, his lifelong passion. For the better part of twenty years, he lived outside the U.S. – a Peace Corps Volunteer in Korea, an English teacher in Saudi Arabia, a Fulbright lecturer in Kosovo, a writer and teacher trainer in Canterbury, England, a U.S. foreign service officer in Barbados and Korea. With an MAT in ESL, an MA in Linguistics and a PhD in Education Policy, he landed back in the U.S. in Santa Barbara, CA with his wife, Marilynn and three children.¬†And there he remains after a two decade sojourn teaching reading and writing to underprepared students at Santa Barbara City College. He spends his time swimming, hiking, walking, playing guitar and mandolin,¬†reading, writing, cooking and traveling, very much in love with central and northern California from Big Sur to Mendocino.
